Lake Baikal is the world?s deepest and oldest freshwater lake, containing more than one fifth of the world?s fresh water supply. Lake Baikal is 1,637 meters (1mi) deep and almost 640 kilometers long. The visibility of the water can be as deep as 40 meters, giving an incredible view of the cliffs and vegetation below. Baikal?s unusual ecosystem supports 848 unique animal and 133 unique plant specials. However, it is the pristine beauty of the lake and the surrounding mountain ranges make Baikal a major attraction for any nature lover.

This trip allows you to experience the dramatic nature and people of Lake Baikal over a long weekend, departing on Wednesday evening and returning Tuesday morning to Moscow. You will search the banks for the only freshwater seals in the world, mountain bike the Orkhon Island, home to great shamans, and walk the cliffs, coves, and beaches along the shores. The local people will welcome you with Siberian hospitality, hearty native meals, and local lore. This trip is a 6-day combination of trekking and boating along the capes and islands of Baikal.

Best of Baikal - Itinerary

Day 1
|
Arrive in Irkutsk in a.m. from Moscow (Wednesday night) flight. Meet trip leader at the airport. Have breakfast in Irkutsk, and travel by car and ferry to Olkhon island. Olkhon is the largest island of the Pribaikalsky National Park and a sacred place for shamans from the pre-Buddhist religion. Two straits, the Maloye More and the Olkhon Gates separate the island from the mainland. Arrive in the village of Khuzhir, the fishing center of Olkhon. Check out the local fishing boats, and meet the colorful locals. Stay overnight in a rustic wooden homes. Relax in the Russian banya, and sample the local cuisine.

Day 2
|
In the morning, walk to the Shaman cape, which, according to the legend, was a home to the Great Host of Olkhon Island (the patron of shaman religion). Take a Russian jeep on a bumpy drive to the North of the Island. Have a picnic lunch near the Three Brother?s Cape and start trek to the Khoboy Cape where we will spend the night.

Day 3
|
After breakfast, trek along the Eastern Shore of the island to Uzur Bay and a view of the Eastern Shore of the lake. We board our ?Yaroslavets? boat and crew and set out for our journey north.

Day 4
|
In the morning, take the Yaroslavets along the lake to see magnificent rocks and cliffs with caves on the Baikal shore, alpine meadows and alpine tundra, mountain taiga forest. Stop to visit the Ushkanii Islands with the biggest rookery of endemic Baikal seal, where hundreds of animals gather in summer. We can hike on the islands, part of the Zabaikalsky National Park. Taste famous Baikal ukha (fish soup) and try a swim in chilly lake Baikal. Overnight on the boat.

Day 5
|
Head back toward Irkutsk via Listvyanka. Time permitting, we may have a chance to stop and hike through the tunnels of the old Baikal railway. Farewell dinner on the boat as we cruise up the Angara river, and overnight in hotel.

Early morning transfer to airport.
